La Scolca: 5 Generations for 105 Years of Gavi

The recent celebration of the ultra-centennial birthday of the La Scolca winery provided an extraordinary opportunity to delve into the history and future of one of Italy’s most prestigious wine estates. Held at the lavish Palazzo Visconti in Milan, the event provided a perfect setting to honor a tradition that spans over a century.

At the gathering, alongside the esteemed Gavi dei Gavi and La Scolca Spumante Riserva D’Antan Brut Millesimato wines, the spotlight was on Chiara Soldati, an extraordinary woman and visionary entrepreneur who embodies the essence of familial continuity and innovation in the wine world.

Chiara Soldati, heir to a long family tradition dating back to 1919 when the La Scolca estate was acquired by her great-great-grandfather, proudly showcased her confidence in the future by passing the torch to the fifth generation, represented by her twenty-one-year-old son, Ferdinando Caracciolo di Vietri:

“For 105 years, from generation to generation, we have believed in people, in sacrifice, and in family. These values have given me the wings to fly and the strength to climb mountains. Today, these are gifts for the fifth generation, which is committed to leading the La Scolca estate.”

Her words, filled with passion and determination, echoed a dedication to family, sacrifice, and strength, values that continue to guide La Scolca on its path to success.

The sentiments expressed by her son Ferdinando were equally poignant, reflecting a deep sense of beauty, emotion, and admiration, along with a profound passion for the work:

“Five years ago, I was not yet certain of what I would do after my studies; most likely in my heart, I already knew that I would follow in the family’s footsteps. Today, however, I am sure that my future lies here, alongside my mother, to continue this tradition and accomplish great things together, remembering the work and sacrifices of past generations but always looking to the future and modernity.”

But who is Chiara Soldati beyond being a prominent figure in the world of wine? She is also a formidable entrepreneur who has masterfully upheld the prestige and innovation of the family cellar. Her leadership has helped solidify La Scolca as a benchmark in the international wine scene, spearheading ambitious and visionary projects that promise to keep the legacy of the winery alive for many years to come.

The event at Palazzo Visconti offered attendees the opportunity to immerse themselves not only in the exquisite wines offered by La Scolca but also in the beauty and historical significance of one of Milan’s architectural gems.

Tastings of Gavi dei Gavi and La Scolca Spumante Riserva D’Antan Brut Millesimato delighted guests, complementing refined dishes that showcased the unique characteristics of these wines (such as Crab Risotto and Dotted Turbot Fillet).

So what makes La Scolca so special?

The answer lies in its long history of innovation and quality. Founded on land that was once partially wooded and partially cultivated with wheat, the estate has become an oasis of Cortese vineyards, the grape variety featured in the renowned Gavi wines. It was here, at the beginning of the 20th century, that Chiara Soldati’s great-great-grandfather had the insight to plant the first Cortese vineyards in an area traditionally dedicated to red grape varieties.

Today, La Scolca is synonymous with elegance and sophistication in the world of wine, thanks to the constant dedication and commitment of the Soldati family. With over 250 kilometers of vine rows situated in the best locations in Rovereto and Gavi, La Scolca continues to produce high-quality wines that reflect the uniqueness of the terroir and the artisanal skill that has made the cellar a true model of style in the global wine scene.

Thus, the celebration of La Scolca’s birthday was not only a tribute to the long history and tradition of the cellar but also an opportunity to look confidently and determinedly towards the future. With the leadership of Chiara Soldati and the passion of the fifth generation, La Scolca will continue to shine in the international wine scene, carrying forward the legacy of a family that has made quality and innovation its hallmarks.
