WiCA | Women in Cinema Award Great Women of Soul

Women are once again the protagonists at the Lido of Venice during the 78th edition of the Venice Film Festival. The Awards ceremony will be held on 7 September, 6:00pm. at the “Spazio Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo”, at Hotel Excelsior Venice. The Award is conceived and presented by Claudia Conte, a young famous Italian actress, in collaboration with Angela Prudenzi, journalist and movie critic and Cristina Scognamillo, journalist, critic and PR & press agent.

The prizes are awarded by an all-female Academy composed of cinema journalists: Fulvia Caprara, Alessandra De Luca, Titta Fiore, Alessandra Magliaro, Antonella Nesi, Chiara Nicoletti, Cristiana Paternò, Angela Prudenzi, Barbara Righini, Marina Sanna, Stefania Ulivi. WiCA is sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture for its deep meaning. The Award aims to enhance and pay homage to the talent and value of women, mainly in the film industry and the world of the arts, with a strong focus on the social and business world. An award that wants to be a small piece of the great mosaic of equal opportunities.

Among the winners, the famous stylist Alberta Ferretti, the Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić who won the Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival, the Belgian-French actress Virginie Efira, who in 2012 was the female lead in Dead Man Talking, a darkly comic story based loosely on 1001 Nights: the film has since been nominated for eight Magritte Awards, winning for Best Production Design, Marta Donzelli, President of the Italian Experimental Center of Cinematography and the Italian writer Nadia Terranova. This year a special recognition goes to two Afghan Resilience personalities, the film director Shahrbanoo Sadat and the activist Zahara Ahmadi who recently was rescued in Italy.

Claudia Conte declared: “We want to send a clear message to everybody: Afghan women, the most fragile and in danger nowadays must not be left alone. By rewarding Shahrbanoo Sadat and Zahara Ahmadi, we are ideally close to all their Afghan sisters who remained in the country”. The WiCA – Film Critics Award will be awarded to Silvio Danese, a journalist, author of the “Interview with the bride”, an intense novel focused on the topic of violence against women.

Women in Cinema Award was given in September 2020 in Venice to directors Francesca Comencini, Claudio Giovannesi and Christian Petzold; the French actress Ludivine Sagnier, the writer Chiara Tagliaferri, the president of the David di Donatello Piera Detassis and the journalist Antonella Nesi who later joined the WiCA Academy. The second edition took place during the Rome Film Festival and the awards were won by Liliana Cavani, Paola Cortellesi, Riccardo Milani, Daniela Ciancio, Donatella Palermo and Claudio Masenza. The WiCA’s cultural partner is the Italian Contemporary Toronto International Film Festival.
